Do You Lead from Distrust?

Among all the attributes of top leaders, trust is an ingredient they all share. Not only are they all highly trusted, but they lead from a position of trust.  You can have a compelling vision, an incredible strategy, and excellent communication skills; however if you are constantly suspicious of your people around you – you will never net the results you want.  Leaders who lead from trust produce the results the organization is looking for time and time again.

Trust vs. Suspicion

If an individual leads from a position of distrust, it will create frustration in the mind of the leader.  If a leader always believes the worst of their team members, it creates an unhealthy atmosphere to work and operate in.  Employees know and feel when their supervisors are thinking the worst of them and not giving them the benefit of the doubt.  When we distrust our employees, they have a tendency to live up to those low expectations.  Conversely, when an employee feels their supervisor trusts them, there is freedom in that.  If an employee feels that their supervisor trusts them, it gives them the freedom to take risks, and leverage their talents and giftings to create greater organizational success. 

Just because you trust your team completely, doesn’t mean you’re absolving them of everything and looking the other way with a blind eye.  By trusting your team, it demonstrates to them you believe they’re the best for the task at hand and you wouldn’t want to tackle a project with anyone else but them – it’s all about empowerment.

Expectation Gap

Whenever there are more than a couple of people within an organization, there will be an expectation gap from time to time.  The gap consists between what is promised and what is delivered.  What happens when this gap occurs will impact the culture of an organization.  Trust is the key.  Great leaders know that when a gap occurs they need to trust their employees and chose not to jump to conclusions of distrust or suspicion.  It’s a choice to believe the best of an individual and lead with trust, especially when an expectation gap has occurred.

When a leader distrusts, it fosters skepticism, low productivity, and high turnover; whereas trust creates greater team morale, innovation, and higher revenues.  Trust creates healthy momentum within your team and it will spread within the organization.  Trust affects a leader’s impact and the company’s bottom line more than any other single thing.
